Here, our students’ needs matter to us. Our “Bridge the Gap” program helps our students become better readers. Before starting the program, our students are assessed with a baseline test. Using the baseline’s assessment data students are given individualized plans that meet them where they are. Students who have not mastered their “reading skills” as of yet are taught phonics and other reading strategies to be able to sound out unknown words. Students who have difficulty with reading comprehension are taught to break down text into smaller portion and writing summaries. Reading contents are customized based on students’ textile level. As they work on their short summaries, they are taught skills to analyze informational text. Writing is incorporated as it helps students with grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structuring. Students are encouraged to involve in creative writing as it allows them to explore their imagination.
